A Boat lands on the South Sea island of Pago Pago, because one of the crew might have Cholera, so all passengers must wait until officals allow the boat to continue. Two couples, Mr. and Mrs. Davidson (Walter Huston, Beulah Bondi) and Dr. and Mrs. Macphail (Matt Moore, Kendall Lee) and a prostitute named Sadie Thompson (Joan Crawford) find housing at the General Store and Hotel. Sadie spends her time partying with the Marines who were also on the boat. The Davidsons are religious reformers and missionaries and object to her entertaining the men in her room. Mr. Davidson tries to reform her ways and save her soul.
