John and Mary Sims have been hit hard by the Depression and are having a hard time paying the rent and buying food. They trade a ukulele for a chicken because they have invited Mary's rich uncle for dinner to see if he has a job for John. He tells them that he's also been hit hard by the Depression but has a small farm that the bank is going to take away from him since he stopped paying the Mortgage. He owes more than its worth and land prices have dropped and is almost worthless, but if they can make the farm pay, they can start paying the bill and keep the farm. Knowing nothing of farming they jump at the chance. They end up getting help from other people down on their luck and start a commune.
