Piano Player Al Roberts (Tom Neal), hitch hikes from New York to Los Angeles to get back together with his ex-girlfriend who left him to become famous in Hollywood. He finally gets a ride with someone who is going all the way there. Al helps with the driving but when it starts raining, he pulls over to put the top up but can't wake up the car's owner. The owner now dead, Al thinks that the cops will think that he killed him. He takes his money and ID and takes on the identity of Charles Haskell, Jr., just until he gets to Los Angeles. Its downhill from there as more and more bad things start happening to him. With no control of his fate, he holds on for the ride of his life.
